Welcome To Ampersand

The Literary World of Nick Jones

Legend has it that the ampersand was invented by lazy medieval monks, who tired of writing the word ‘and’ with their quills, as they toiled away inscribing by hand their prayer books and psalters. You could call it an early example of a Religious Pittman’s shorthand.

Over the centuries, of course, countless typographical designers have tried their hands at stylised forms of that distinctive figure-eight glyph, which was originally an amalgam of the ‘e’ and the ‘t’ of the Latin ‘et’. My favourite – which you will see decorating the opening page of this website - is the italicised form from the classic typeface invented by the Frenchman Claude Garamond. To me, its elegant form is timeless; yet that sexy squiggle you see at the top of this site is actually 475 years old! If the subject of typefaces and typography interests you, I can thoroughly recommend Simon Garfield’s absorbing ‘Just My Type’ (published by Profile Books).
